A Cherry in her Eye

Look at that sweet little face! This is my cocker spaniel, Scout. She is the most precious puppy, and the best little fur baby ever.

On Wednesday I took her to the groomers for a bath and a hair cut. When I picked her up from her "spa day", I noticed something red in her eye. The groomer told me it was called cherry eye, and that is was nothing to worry about. After reading about cherry eye on the internet, I knew that is was nothing to panic over, but I did need to take her to the vet.

Yesterday, we visited the vet. The vet gave me some drops to put in her eye to reduce the swelling and hopefully get rid of the cherry eye, but she gave me little hope that the drops would work. If the drops do not work, Scout has to have surgery to fix her eye. The surgery is $500. Holy cow! Oh, and the best part is that it could happen again and require another surgery.

Now this is my sweet baby, and you better bet that if she needs surgery she will get surgery. However $500 seems a little extreme. I am going to call around to a few other vet clinics to see what they charge for this type of surgery. Before Wednesday, I had never, ever even heard of cherry eye. I was hoping that maybe some of you had experience with cherry eye. Has your dog ever had cherry eye? If so, what did your vet do?

Thanks for your help! I have been sick with worry over my sweet little Scout this week.

Before I go, I couldn't resist adding another picture. She is just so cute. I love that little squishy face, her sweet freckles and her big furry Chewbacca paws!

pet surgeries are so expensive.. i have no idea why vets charge so much but it's very rare that when i've had a pet who needed something done that i've been able to find a reasonable price.

hope everything works out and you don't have to spend $500!!

My neighbor had two cockers with cherries and they went away! Hopefully that will happen with your baby! I know what you mean about surgeries with dogs. My parents had a greyhound who shattered his leg 15 years ago and when all was said and done they spend $15,000 on him because of a ton of complications. Once he was completely cured he was already 12 and died 6 months later of spleen cancer. My parents say that they didnt regret a dollar because he had 6 extra months that they wouldnt have had if they put him to sleep (they would never). Dogs are totally a labor of love, but I think they are worth every penny!!

Oh. My. Goodness! What a lovely little baby! I wish I could touch her through my computer screen. I'm sorry she's a little under the weather, I hope you don't end up needing surgery. Poor little thing. She's honestly super gorgeous!

She's so cute! I want to pet her! Pets can be expensive, but if it were my furbaby I'd do whatever it took.

Oh no! She is so adorable :) I hope it all goes well. My pooch hasn't had that before, but I know what it is like to think they are sick (and that it will be expensive). Keep us posted!

That stinks! My chihuahua had a somewhat similar condition with his eyes that required surgery that might need to be done multiple times, but we were able to find something to help instead of surgery. Check the internet (I'm sure you probably have though) for things you can do other than surgery. We found that Vasaline eye drops work great on my chihuahua for his condition. Good Luck and I hope your furbaby gets better soon! Prayers and thoughts sent your way!

Have you called the vet school to see what they charge? I know sometimes the clinic is a little cheaper than local vets...

I've owned to cocker spaniels... a black one named Risky and a blond one named Hunter. I loved those damn dogs. Never had experience with cherry eye. Hope everything works out and your beautiful baby doesn't have to go through surgery!

Aww poor baby!! That happened to King Arthur. The steroids drops and antibiotics cleared it up!

Poor thing! She is adorable! I have never heard of this before, but I would definitely get another couple of opinions at least. Maybe there's something else to try before you have to resort to surgery. Of course, I'm like you, I would do anything for my baby, too!

Awww. she's so cute! I've never even heard of cherry eye, but I hope it either goes away or the surgery doesn't cost quite that much!

Scout is so very precious!! I have never heard of that either but I'll also ask around. I hope another solution can be found instead of paying $500 but I know you'd pay it if you have to! Hope you are having a wonderful weekend!

So I'm sure that you read it on the internet, but cherry eye is actually pretty common in cockers. It's a tear gland and sometimes with this breed the ligaments aren't strong enough to hold it in place. There are drops that might help some of the inflammation and sometimes it will pop back in place but usually surgery is your best option. Honestly, 500 is probably about what you'll pay for a good surgeon... Some places will remove the gland for cheaper. Not a good idea as it is responsible for about 30% of the tears and can cause problems with dry eye if removed.. Usually if it does recur (which can happen) they'll do it at a much cheaper rate for you if you go to the same place... Maybe this helps some.. I actually work in animal ophthalmology so I see this all the time. =)
